WTF Leadership

Redefining Leadership

We The Free is redefining what "leadership" means in the animal rights movement. While organizations typically place founders and directors at the top of the "hierarchy of leadership", We The Free flips the traditional hierarchy on its head.

WTF volunteers are the most important team members, as without them events simply could not operate. Organizers and Support Team members work to serve volunteers and fulfill the needs of their communities.

What does this mean for WTF team members?

  • Local Teams are empowered to make their own strategic decisions.

  • WTF collects feedback to learn what resources our teams require.

  • WTF accepts suggestions and embraces innovation to event formats.

  • WTF involves the wider team in decision-making whenever possible.

Who are the people behind WTF?

Like we said above, we don’t view ourselves as being “Leaders” - our role is more that of a facilitator - bringing together all the elements to empower our global community of activists! So lets start with the most important people behind We The Free: you. If you aren’t already active in a team, get involved now and take part in our regular feedback surveys to guide our strategy.

Local Support Team: Recognising just a few of the WTF Organizers

Regional Support Team

  • Kerry Pelkey

    REGIONAL SUPPORT LEAD: EUROPE

Kerry has been a dedicated vegan activist for 5 years. In 2018, she put her crippling social anxiety to one side to speak up for the animals. In the years that followed, Kerry went from being a friendless misanthrope who barely had the heart to engage with other activists, to becoming an unlikely confidant to new volunteers.

Now the Regional Support Lead for Europe, her responsibilities include onboarding new organizers and providing them with the ongoing support and resources they need to effectively manage their teams.

She feels blessed to be in a position where she can use her own battles with self-esteem and depression to reassure and empower others, encouraging them to get active, not just for the animals and the planet, but themselves, too.

  • Kai McBeth

    REGIONAL SUPPORT LEAD: OCEANIA

Kai has been an activism powerhouse in his local community for some time, working with both We The Free and Animal Rights Activism Sydney (ARAS) to make events happen every week.

He also has experience running outreach workshops, giving talks, and generally getting stuff done for the animals!

Now a Regional Support Lead for Oceania, he helps onboard new organizers in his region and offers ongoing support to existing teams to grow their communities and increase their reach and impact.

  • James Pearce

    ADVOCACY AMBASSADOR

James has been a passionate vegan for a number of years and did his first ever street activism in the summer of 2021 as the organizer for WTF Canterbury. Since then he has travelled all around England supporting new WTF teams with equipment, setup, & inductions.

As well as fighting for animal liberation, James supports other worthwhile causes, such as founding Educate To Liberate; an organization creating education opportunities for students in Liberia. James is now an “Activism Ambassador” and is responsible for supporting the growth of new teams worldwide and supporting with organizer onboarding.

  • Sasha Joliffe Yasawi

    ADVOCACY AMBASSADOR

Originally from Kazakhstan, Sash relocated to the UK after a period of international travel, while working in a prestigious hotel chain. Raised in a household where his parents came from contrasting backgrounds—politically, religiously, culturally, and linguistically—he developed a keen interest in diverse perspectives. This upbringing developed his passion for activism from an early age, significantly influenced by his father's political career. With degrees in Psychology, Arts, and Politics, Sash has cultivated a diverse skill set, including an understanding of psychodynamics—the study of human behaviour and motivations.

In roles such as Advocacy Ambassador at We The Fee and as the UK Liaison for Our Planet Theirs Too (NARD), Sash prioritizes nurturing growth and professionalism within the vegan movement. He brings a unique blend of cultural skills to his advocacy work, emphasizing unity and alliances through partnerships and collaborations.

In seeking a shift from tactics that can be perceived as inflammatory in the animal rights movement, he focuses on non-violent communication and ethical treatment, avoiding language or actions that contradict the movement's values. His interest in consent and recognition theory enhances his understanding of psychodynamics, contributing to his approach in navigating interpersonal relationships within the vegan community. He advocates for a balanced approach that assertively communicates their message while upholding respectful and compassionate dialogue based on shared values, aiming to evoke compassion and appeal to humanness while breaking down defensiveness.

Global Support Team

  • James Hattersley

    FOUNDER & EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

James has been vegan for 6 years and an activist for 5 years. In that time, he has been a chapter organizer for an animal rights organization, as well as taking part in vigils, marches, animal rescues, disruptions, farm investigations, and volunteering at animal sanctuaries.

James has 10 years’ experience working for charities in the social care field, most recently as an Operations Manager; responsible for the care of people with learning disabilities across multiple cities, and successfully leading a team of 4 managers and 115 front-line care staff through the height of the pandemic. This role included responsibility for quality & compliance, and the management of a multi-million dollar annual budget. In April 2021, after becoming interested in Effective Altruism, James left his leadership role in social care to focus his efforts 100% on animal advocacy where he believes that (due to the scale, tractability, and neglectedness of the animal rights cause) he can make the largest difference to make the world a more just place.

James is also a training facilitator, delivering vegan communication skills to activists for free twice each month.

  • Zachary Champoux

    OPERATIONS DIRECTOR

A passionate vegan for 12 years and animal activist for 3 years, Zachary recognizes animal rights as the most pressing social justice issue of our time. He acted as local organizer with an animal rights organization, facilitating weekly activism events. He has attended vigils and protests, volunteered at an animal sanctuary, and shared examples of street outreach via his YouTube channel, Starchy Zach.

Zachary previously worked as Manager of Corporate and Community Development for the MS Society of Canada, where he acted as liaison for over 250 MS Walk team captains and 50 MS Bike team captains. He raised upwards of $140,000 for Enactus Mount Royal in a voluntary role as VP Fund Development over one year.

Zachary has worked as a director of We The Free since September 2021.

  • Panch S

    SOCIAL MEDIA MANAGER

Panch has been a vegan activist for 2 years and an animal rescuer for a year. She has been a local organizer for animal rights, climate justice while partaking in vigils, farm investigations, documentary screenings, artivism and street theater.

She has developed and facilitated curriculums for students panning across 6-months that inculcates values of veganism and covers different aspects of a compassionate lifestyle within them as an extended version of the humane education workshops. Moreover, she has been involved in advocating for policy change with the government authorities during several campaigns surrounding animal rights and welfare.

She is an incredibly driven and enthusiastic voice for social justice, both in India and globally through her thought-provoking social media campaigns. She has collaborated with several organizations across different social movements to unite people in making the society a better place for both human and non human animals.

  • Jen Deighan-Schenk

    COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT MANAGER

Jen was our Regional Support Lead for North America for almost 2 years, and in this time proved herself an invaluable part of the WTF team. Now, Jen manages all our training and development programmes, and oversees our community building efforts and campaigns globally.

Jen has been involved in many different types of activism and has professional experience as both a trainer and community leader, and has even risked her liberty to speak up on behalf on animals and to highlight what happens behind closed doors, facing criminal charges on several occasions for her invaluable work as a whistleblower.
