WTF Movie Challenge
How it works.
Members of the public are “challenged” to watch a 3-5 minute “movie”, with a twist: the movie is a supercut of an animal rights documentary showcasing some of the worst legal and standard practices in animal agriculture: usually in return for an incentive of some kind, such as a cookie, cupcake, or donut.
These participants then watch the footage uninterrupted and with sound, either using headphones or in a viewing stall. Volunteers then engage in “outreach” conversations with participants to explore their feelings about the footage, and ultimately sharing vegan resources alongside their reward.
Why a movie challenge?
This event format has several unique properties that make it potentially even more impactful than other popular event formats:
It is a challenge that people choose to participate in, not a traditional “protest”. The challenge element gives people an objective to complete, and this might lead to participant uptake that would normally be missed by people who avoid protests. It might also be a viable alternative in countries where protests are heavily regulated.
The viewer experience is intensely intimate; rather than simply happening upon a screen showing footage, participants are choosing to engage in a 1-on-1 experience with a screen for a set duration.
This format leads to significantly less conflict than other, more disruptive event formats, and avoids exposing children to potentially traumatising footage without parental consent.
